Welaka Guide

Where to Eat and Drink in Welaka: The Golf Cart Route

Welaka is small enough that the list of places to eat is short and good enough that the list is worth having. Every spot below sits within a few minutes of the others, every road in town is open to a street-legal cart, and none of it requires moving your car.

Here is the whole thing, plus the order that makes an afternoon out of it.

One honest note before you plan around any of it. Hours in a town this size move with the season, the weather and whoever is working. We are not going to publish hours that will be wrong by the time you read them. Call ahead if a specific stop is the whole reason you are going out.

Where can you eat in Welaka, Florida?

Six places, all in town: Shrimps 'R Us and More for family-style seafood, Bomba's Home Cooking for a proper lunch, Lexi's Deli and Cafe for something quicker, Long's Log Cabin Bar and Package for a historic bar, Boat Bar inside Welaka Lodge, and Andersen's Lodge with Andersen's Bar & Grill on the water.

The stops

Place Known for Cart parking Good for
Shrimps 'R Us and More Family-style seafood, live music, covered pavilion, tiki bars Easy A group of six
Bomba's Home Cooking Home cooking, the name is the menu Easy Lunch that fills you
Lexi's Deli and Cafe Deli and cafe, quick Easy Between things
Long's Log Cabin Bar and Package A bar since 1929, package store attached Easy The afternoon, and the beer run home
Boat Bar Beers, wines, signature cocktails, inside Welaka Lodge Easy Sunset
Andersen's Lodge Andersen's Bar & Grill, on the river, karaoke Easy Dinner, and staying put

Shrimps 'R Us and More

Family-style casual seafood, lunch and dinner. Large rooms for banquets and parties, a covered pavilion outside, tiki bars and live music.

This is the group stop. If you rented the 6-seater, this is the reason. Six people show up at once, sit at one table, and nobody had to take two cars.

Bomba's Home Cooking

Home cooking, in a town where that means what it says.

Good midday stop on the route between the ramp and the hatchery. You will not want to do much for an hour afterward, which is fine, because there is a river to look at.

Lexi's Deli and Cafe

Deli and cafe. The stop for when you are not committing to a whole sit-down thing.

Useful on a fishing morning: grab something, eat it at the ramp, get on the water.

Long's Log Cabin Bar and Package

A historic bar in Welaka, established 1929. It has been a bar for nearly a century and it holds true to what a bar should be.

The package store attached makes it a practical stop as well as a social one. Somebody sober drives, and that person picks up the ice on the way out.

Boat Bar

Inside Welaka Lodge, with beers, wines and signature cocktails.

The lodge sits on a high bluff over the St. Johns, which puts this among the better places in town to end a day. Sunset happens whether you are watching or not, and this is a good place to watch.

Andersen's Lodge

Riverfront lodging with Andersen's Bar & Grill serving food, drinks and karaoke.

If you are staying here, dinner is the shortest cart trip of your weekend. If you are not, it is worth the ride.

The order that makes an afternoon

  1. Late lunch at Bomba's or Shrimps 'R Us
  2. A slow lap to the water, Bryant's Wharf Kayak Launch or the Welaka Boat Ramp
  3. Long's Log Cabin when the heat breaks
  4. Sunset at Boat Bar or Andersen's
  5. Home before it is fully dark, headlights on, taking it slow

That is a whole good day and it covers maybe four miles.

The drinking-and-driving part

A golf cart is a motor vehicle. Florida's DUI law applies to a street-legal low-speed vehicle exactly the way it applies to a car, and a public road is a public road.

So: somebody sober drives. Every driver has to be 21 or older, licensed, insured and listed on the rental agreement anyway, which makes the designated driver conversation a short one.

Further out, if you want a longer run

Remember a cart cannot travel a road posted above 35, so these are car trips or a delivered-cart-once-you-are-there situation:

  • Porky's Lodge, Bar & Grill in Georgetown, on the water with sunset views
  • Hideaway Bar and Grill in Pomona Park, live music
  • The Lochside Restaurant, Bar & Marina and Three Bananas in Crescent City
  • Velchoff's Corner in Palatka, Southern comfort food and fresh seafood

We deliver by arrangement to all of those towns. Call (386) 603-0295 first to confirm availability, then book online.
