Yes. Our carts are street-legal low-speed vehicles, and Florida requires anyone operating an LSV to carry a valid driver license while driving. Our own rules go further: every driver must be 21 or older and show proof of their own auto insurance. Ordinary golf carts follow a looser state rule that does not apply to a rental like ours.
That is the short version. The long version matters, because Florida changed the golf cart rules in 2023 and a lot of what you will find online is out of date.
Why the answer depends on the vehicle
Florida treats golf carts and low-speed vehicles as two different things.
A golf cart tops out at 20 mph and is not registered or titled. It may only run on streets a local government has designated for it.
A low-speed vehicle, or LSV, runs between 20 and 25 mph, carries a VIN and a plate, and is titled, registered and insured like a car. It may use any road posted at 35 mph or less.
We rent LSVs. So the LSV rule is the one that applies to you.
What Florida requires for an LSV
Any person operating a low-speed vehicle must have a valid driver license in their possession while driving. That comes straight out of Florida Statute 316.2122, and it has no age carve-out and no quiet-street exception.
In practice: if you are the one steering, your license is on you. Not in the rental house, not in the glovebox at home. On you.
We add two requirements on top of the statute. Every driver has to be 21 or older, and every driver has to show proof of their own auto insurance. Both get checked at delivery, and both are our policy rather than Florida law.
What Florida requires for an ordinary golf cart
Since the 2023 change, Florida Statute 316.212 splits it by age:
- 18 or older: you need a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver license works, but so does a state ID card or a passport.
- Under 18: you need a valid learner's driver license or a valid driver license.
This is the rule people find when they search, and it is why so many visitors arrive thinking a photo ID is enough. For a private, non-registered golf cart on a designated Welaka street, it is. For the LSV in your driveway, it is not.
None of that is the rule for a rental from us anyway, since ours are LSVs.
So who in your group can drive?
Anyone 21 or older with a valid driver license and their own auto insurance, listed on the rental agreement. That is the whole list.
Some things people ask about, answered plainly:
Can my 19-year-old drive it? No. Twenty-one is our floor, and it applies to every driver, not just the person who booked. Florida would allow younger operators on an LSV with a license. We do not.
Can my teenager drive it in the yard? Our rental agreement does not allow it, on a road or off one. The cart is insured and rented on the terms we agreed to, and an unlisted driver puts all of that at risk.
Can I let my buddy drive after two beers? No. Florida's DUI law applies to a low-speed vehicle the same way it applies to a car. Impaired operation on a public road is a DUI, cart or not.
Does an out-of-state license work? Yes. Any valid driver license does.
What we check at delivery
Delivery is quick. We bring the cart to where you are staying, fully charged and with a cable so you can plug in overnight, free inside Welaka city limits. We go through four things:
- Your driver license, checked against the name on the booking, and your age
- Proof of your auto insurance
- Everyone else who plans to drive, same two checks
- A walk around the cart, lights and belts, and where you can take it
The good news on that last one: inside Welaka town limits, everywhere. Every road in town is posted 35 mph or under, which is exactly what a street-legal LSV is allowed to use. Where Can You Legally Drive a Golf Cart in Welaka? has the detail.
Do you need a license for the passengers?
No. Passengers ride in seats, wear the belts, and that is all the law asks of them. Nobody stands, nobody rides on the back rail, and nobody hangs a leg out. Occupants are limited to the number of available seats, and our rental terms say the same.
If you are trying to fit six people, book the 6-seater. It runs $95 a day against $80 for the 4-seater, and it beats the alternative.
The one rule people forget
The license has to be valid. Expired counts as no license. Suspended counts as no license. Same goes for the insurance card, so pull it up on your phone before you leave home rather than in a driveway in the Bass Capital of the World on a Friday afternoon.
Bring all of it for everyone who wants a turn driving, not just whoever booked.
Ready to book? Book online. Staying outside Welaka? Call (386) 603-0295 first to confirm we can deliver to you.
